Is there actually enough room in there to swap the pulley, without pulling the axle and removing the alternator ?...

I've got an impact gun, But I was planning on R&R'n the alternator

Yes, there is enough room to swap the pulley without removing it from the car. I simply place the alternator (with the pulley facing the ground) at rest between the mid (jack) shaft and the power steering rack. Now, I hold the pulley itself with one hand (wearing thick gloves to protect myself) and zap the nut off with an impact gun using the other hand. Viola'... off it comes.

Hrm... I see an impact gun in my near future.

There are so many times I could have saved myself some work had I been properly equipped. I guess that's where some of my Christmas money goes.

I bought a $70 electric impact wrench before my install and it has served me very well ever since.

It doesn't have the power to take, say the crank pulley nut off, but it takes care of just about everything else.
